Finding Inspiration - Can Other Students Help You Improve Your Yoga?

...he others in the room.

The most basic help from a quick look around is if we are not fully concentrating on the teachers instruction. If we are focussed on our current pose its possible that we miss the name of the next pose or didnt fully understand the instructions then a quick look over can provide clarification.

While we may rely on the instructor to help with our alignment, its not always possible for them to visit us all individually for each posture. Instead, while we hold the pose we should be feeling our position, examining our alignment and correcting it ourselves if there are mirrors in the room, they can help with this for some postures. If we are unsure about the correct alignment and position for some postures a quick look over at the more capable students in the room, to see their position, can be all thats needed to correct our own understanding. If we can see the instructor correcting another students posture, we can follow that and try to apply it to our own posture. (Obviously this approach has the risk that we are copying someone else who is not aligned correctly. If youre really unsure of the pose then its still best to ask the instructor).

Yoga and Skiing Go Together Before, During and After the Ski Season

... gain endurance and deeper breathing skills which will aid you when the season starts. I always laugh at the timing of articles in magazines touting: Its time to get into skiing shape when the season has already started. Sure, a pre-season tune up on the body is needed, but that shouldnt be a month after it has started; by then you are already behind the game and open yourself up for sore muscles, strains and possible injury.

Cross-training during the summer and fall months is invaluable and will give you a leg up when November arrives; swim, play tennis, bicyc...more

Of course there are deodorants on the market that dont contain the chemical suppressants of the more popular brands but it is really necessary, for women in particular, to check the product labels to be assured this is the case.

Be particularly careful to scrutinize those products that guarantee full protection from perspiration as these will usually contain the offending chemicals. .

Remember that underarm perspiration is Natures way of exuding toxins from the upper body and when the process is suppressed it is pretty obvious that there is going to be an adverse reaction.

yoga in Practice: From Worrier to Warrior I

...pt, which is also called mindfulness, is taught by yoga teachers, but it is a universal principle. Mindfulness might also be taught by a Buddhist monk, but what exactly is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is awareness, awakening, and appreciation of the present moment. Why wait until you have more money to enjoy your life? Why look at the next big problem as the end of all problems?

Life is a journey and you might as well enjoy the ride. When you are in a yoga class, focus on the lesson at hand. Do your personal best, and use your breath as a tool for the connection between mind and body.

Benefit of yoga - The Christian Viewpoint

...ind and spirit to the benefit of yoga is both dangerous and against everything Christianity preaches. Christians believe that studying yoga is akin to practicing Hinduism, and one cannot separate the philosophy of Hinduism from their Christian beliefs, regardless of the health benefit of yoga.

As a practicing Buddhist, I take issue with this viewpoint. To me, this smacks of tunnel vision and narrowmindedness. A Christian is expected to open their heart and minds to Jesus, and to give in to the spirit of the Lord. They are expected to rely on blind faith, and to accept the word of God as the only truth in the world. A thinking person would find this hypocritical, for on the one hand Christians preach that yoga must be avoided because opening the mind to clearer vision encourages the possibility of demonic possession, yet on the other hand preaches that one must open the mind and heart to accept Jesus into their lives. Opening one's heart and mind is exactly that - whether it is to look into one's self, or to accept Jesus into their lives. If, as Christians preach, we are open to demonic possession if we look inside ourselves and open the mind to all the possibilities, how then can we safely open our hearts to the concept of Christianity? Is there a gatekeeper who makes this decisi...more

Explore The History Of yoga - The Beginning

...In a series of articles I will be exploring yoga. I will start in this article with its history, and later articles will explore other various aspects of Yoga including positions.

If you greet each day with sun salutations instead of a latt and can perform the astanga second series with your eyes closed then it may be time to explore the history of yoga, particularly its origins.

Hatha yogathe performance of physical postures and breathing exercisesis just one small part of the eightfold or eight limb path of yoga. For more than 2,000 years, students have gained insight into a wealth of knowledge arising from ancient Vedic scriptures. And, you can do. Thanks to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Written two millennia ago, The Yoga Sutras gives us insight into the rich history of yoga. It also teaches us how to achieve enlightenment by tapping into this complex system of knowledge, beliefs and practices.
